Research Work: Visualization of sacral nerve roots and sacral plexus on gynecological transvaginal ultrasound: feasibility study
Published in: Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology

During medical treatment and research, I am motivated by finding answers to the underlying causes of patients' complaints and introducing new diagnostic methods.

Gábor Szabó MD, PhD, is an advanced gynecologic sonologist and surgeon. He is a senior lecturer and head of the Ultrasound Unit in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary. Gábor is also a supervisor of PhD students, member of the ISUOG Education Committee, AI Special Interest Group, and secretary of the Hungarian Fetal Medicine Society.

During his first years at the university, he was attracted by theoretical subjects such as neuroanatomy. As a fifth-year medical student during the practice for obstetrics and gynecology, his tutor set him up to help with a delivery. His career path was decided right there and then.

He later completed his PhD in Medicine in 2013. His special interest is ultrasound in gynecologic diseases, especially in endometriosis. Gabor also introduced a new field of gynecologic ultrasonography called pelveoneurosonography – examination of the pelvic nerves.

In his daily work, he loves teaching medical students, midwives, and sonographers, but also conducting groundbreaking research. His work on visualization of the sacral nerves with transvaginal ultrasound allows for the detection of pathologies like pelvic deep endometriosis and retroperitoneal pelvic nerve sheath tumors that damage these anatomic structures.

Endometriosis is a worldwide clinical problem and the main cause of pelvic pain and infertility in women of reproductive age. Our article has led to the inclusion of this technique in the IDEA protocol of systematic ultrasound approach, recommended by the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

In his free time, he likes to go hiking and trekking with his wife and three children.
