Research Work: Inflammatory Immune Responses in the Pathogenesis of Tick-Borne Encephalitis

Petra Bogovič, MD, PhD, from the Department of Infectious Diseases of the University Medical Centre Ljubljana, together with her colleagues studied the process and outcome of the tick-borne encephalitis, which enables a better understanding of immune response of the patients and a better medical treatment.
To me medical research represents an upgrade of clinical work and provides an insight into the unknown, which is a special challenge. Furthermore, such new discoveries are directly related to better patient care. Our studies have provided a more reliable prediction of the course of the tick-borne encephalitis and its long-term consequences, and enabled an insight into the immune responses during the course of the disease. Nomination for the International Medis Awards represents a huge honour, acknowledgment for the work done, and confirmation that the approaches were reasonable and correct.
