Research Work: Transcriptomic Differentiation of Phenotypes in Chronic Rhinosinusitis and Its Implications for Understanding the Underlying Mechanisms
Published in: International Journal of Molecular Sciences

We must acknowledge the need of human beings to seek help with the problems they are facing. The availability of information is overwhelming and scary but if they are supported by positive and trustworthy sources, new, emerging solutions arrive, and new hope may arise.

Jure Urbančič, MD, PhD, is a senior otorhinolaryngology consultant, subspecializing in rhinology and skull base surgery. He is also a lecturer for otorhinolaryngology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ljubljana, a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Health Angele Boškin in Jesenice, and senior lecturer at the Alma Mater Faculty Maribor (Ljubljana branch).

Clinical practice needs basic and clinical research support on an everyday basis. The submitted work has shown new insights into the molecular structure of chronic rhinosinusitis, a still mostly unknown field of genes and proteins consisting of pathways that can be targeted with future biologicals.

He believes there were many reasons for him to follow the path of a doctor. First, the firm belief one can matter when aiming to help people. Second, the sheer multitude of options medicine has to offer in terms of specialization. Third, the possibility to do work with your own hands as in surgery.

Urbančič received his master’s and PhD at Faculty of Medicine, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, which led him to become the lead of otorhinolaryngologic outpatient services and of rhinology at the UMC Ljubljana. His curiosity and love for the field also got him involved in the development of the Transnasal Skull base Surgery and becoming a founding member of the Skull base board.

His everyday work obligations ignite in him the need to know more, to find a pattern or the lack of one. And how does he balance the demanding workload and free time? With a lot of help and support from his family.
