Where is best place to take samples (or biopsies) of intestinal tissue in patients with Crohn’s disease? The best place of taking a tissue sample is the edge of the ulcer in the intestines, as proven by Gregor Novak, MD, PhD, together with his colleagues from the Department of Gastroenterology of the University Medical Centre Ljubljana

Today's medicine is evidence-based. But when working in the clinical practice, you many times see that there is missing data in literature. For example, when we wanted to took biopsies during colonoscopy in patients with Crohn's disease, we never knew where to take them; biopsies were just taken randomly. With my work we demonstrated that biopsies should be collected from the ulcer edge. With that the missing gap of evidence in the literature was filled. With research I want to improve management of our patients. The International Medis Awards are a confirmation that I am on the right path.
